Your Window into one of the World’s Most Exciting Areas–
The Southern Cascade Mountains
Northern California and Southern Oregon, where the string of volcanoes begin that form the Cascade Mountains, is one of the magnificent and unspoiled areas of the great northwest. Only a few hours drive north of the Bay Area lies a land of few people and great natural beauty.
Beginning at Redding, CA with Mount Lassen, the Volcanic National Park and Shasta and Trinity Lakes, Interstate 5 winds north through pine covered mountains, past Castle Rock with increasing glimpses of magnificent Mount Shasta, one of the world’s most spiritual peaks that attracts pilgrims worldwide. Follow on past the foot of the mountain through the Shasta Valley to Yreka, CA., historic gold mining town. Cross the Klamath River rapids near Happy Camp and over the Siskiyou pass and Mount Ashland into southern Oregon.
In the beautiful Rogue River Valley, visit Ashland, home of the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival with more live drama than any place outside of Manhattan. Next is Medford near Mount McConnell and turn left toward incredible Crater Lake National Park or the lakes of Klamath Falls. This is truly God’s country!
The people who live in this region experience a state of being different from the cities of California and the Northwest and have tried to create a new state of Jefferson – an almost mythical area where, just prior to World War II these fiercely independent people tried to secede from Oregon and California to form their own state. The bombing of Pearl Harbor put an end to that idea.
